Lack of specific clinical/scientific studies on argan oil's skin care benefits
UPDATE 8th of April 2017: We have recently received several complaints about Essence of Argan oil free trial scams, so as a safe alternative, we would recommend Moroccan Oil Argan oil instead. You can purchase it via Amazon UK by clicking here.
Essence of Argan is a natural and organic skin care product that uses argan oil, which has recently gained a lot of popularity and attention as the “liquid gold” from Morocco that has immense beauty and skin care benefits.
Because of the hype surrounding the product, we decided to take a look at Essence of Argan to see for ourselves whether it is a safe and effective skin care product to use.
Essence of Argan Review
Essence of Argan is 100% pure Moroccan Argan oil. This oil is derived from the nuts of the Argan tree, found mostly in the semi-desert regions of Morocco. Argan oil has been used for many centuries in Morocco by women as a natural moisturizer to protect their skin and restore aged skin. It was also traditionally used to treat dry skin, psoriasis, eczema, and skin inflammation, among its many other medicinal uses.
Today, Essence of Argan is available as a natural skin care lotion that protects, nourishes and revitalizes skin. It is said to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin elasticity, and moisturize the skin, without clogging pores in the process. It is an extremely versatile product that can be used for the face, body, hair, and nails. Essence of Argan is easily absorbed and daily application is recommended for the best results.
We are also told that Essence of Argan has a multitude of uses. As well as reducing signs of aging and moisturizing the skin, it:
- balances pH of the skin
- reduces excess production of sebum
- clears acne and prevents breakouts
- repairs sun damaged skin
- treats psoriasis and eczema
- nourishes and conditions hair
- reduces the appearance of scars and stretch marks
- moisturizes dry hair and scalp.
That’s a lot of things that Essence of Argan claims to do for the skin, body, hair and nails, and that’s not the whole of it!
Are the manufacturer’s claims about Essence of Argan true?
Essence of Argan is manufactured by Lifestyle Advantage Ltd. Apart from calling it “liquid gold”, the manufacturer makes a number of claims regarding the range of cosmetic benefits Essence of Argan has for the skin, hair and nails. Firstly, Essence of Argan is promoted as an anti-aging product that will “make you look up to 10 years younger”. By using the words “up to”, they are giving themselves enough lee way to be making a legitimate statement.
They are certain of argan oil’s abilities to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, which, as a result, will make a person look younger. To what extent it makes a person look younger (i.e. by how many years) will depend on how the product works for them.
According to their site, Essence of Argan can reduce the appearance of wrinkles by up to 60 percent after 4 weeks of use.
Tied to this are the manufacturer’s strong claims relating to Essence of Argan’s moisturizing abilities. It says that the product causes a moisturization increase of more than 500% after 1 week, and a moisturization increase of more than 1000% after the first month. That is about 5 times more than any other natural skin product available on the market today. Just how it manages to do this will be looked at later in the review.
We couldn’t find any specific clinical or scientific studies on Argan oil’s skin care benefits. But the manufacturer’s claims have a basis in scientific research that show the positive effects of the different ingredients in Argan oil.
How does Essence of Argan work?
The manufacturer is right in telling us that argan oil’s beauty secret “lies in its unique composition”. Essence of Argan has a number of natural properties that are responsible for its cosmetic properties. It contains a unique combination of powerful ingredients, including high amounts of essential fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamin E and more.
A list of ingredients and what effects they have will be outlined in detail below. But here we will give you a general idea of how Essence of Argan works to moisturize the skin and reduce the appearance of signs of aging.
Basically, Argan oil is composed of 80% of unsaturated essential fatty acids, which are used to help form the membrane of a skin cell. A thicker membrane is able to retain moisture in a cell better, and can also remove unwanted material from within the cell.
As such, a healthy skin cell requires a strong membrane to properly function. By increasing the amount of fatty acids to the skin, it will increase its ability to retain moisture. In doing so, this enables skin cells to function at their best capacity, which helps increase skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Essence of Argan is said to increase the skin’s moisture without causing an overproduction of oil, which tends to be a common side effect of a lot of moisturizers. This is because some moisturizers have high levels of saturated fatty acids (bad fats) which can’t be used to build membranes and instead block skin pores, causing an increase in sebum production. Argan oil, on the other hand, contains unsaturated fatty acids (the good fats) which helps maintain normal skin oil production.
What are the ingredients of Essence of Argan?
Essence of Argan essential oil contains a number of powerful ingredients that contribute to its skin care benefits. The official website does not have the complete and exact list of ingredients, but we found that pure argan oil contains these ingredients:
Vitamin E (tocopherol): A fat-soluble vitamin and powerful antioxidant, vitamin E is a key ingredient in argan oil. As an antioxidant, vitamin E neutralizes free radicals in the body and prevents them from causing damage to cells and tissues. Its antioxidant properties make it an effective natural healing nutrient that has a number of benefits for the skin. Vitamin E reduces scars and signs of skin aging such as wrinkles, fine lines and age spots. It also is known for acting as a natural moisturizer and protecting skin against sun damage.
Essential fatty acids: These are unsaturated fats that the body needs because it can’t synthesize them on its own. Our body requires these essential fatty acids to repair and build cell membranes. These include oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid of the omega-9 family, and linoleic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid of the omega-6 family. These essential fatty acids help reduce the appearance wrinkles, soften the skin and have anti-inflammatory properties.
Squalene: This is a fat-soluble molecule that is also an antioxidant. It is able to bind to cell membranes in the body and act as an effective free radical scavenger. Squalene also has the ability to attach to fat-soluble toxins and help remove them from the body.
Carotenoids: These are fat-soluble pigment substances that are naturally found in plants. They can protect the eyes and skin from free radicals as well as UV radiation. Carotenoids also promote the health of skin and prevent the growth of skin cancer cells.
Phytosterols: They have anti-inflammatory effects and help to heal scars and can also prevent some skin cancers.
Ferulic acid: This is a natural plant antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and prevents cell damage from UV light, protecting against aging effects from the sun as well as skin cancer.
Polyphenols: These are plant chemicals that act as antioxidants that prevent cellular damage.
Does Essence of Argan have any side effects?
We couldn’t find any reports of side effects to Essence of Argan. Argan oil has been used as food and applied to the skin for centuries in Morocco. It continues to be used and much of the story remains the same. It can even be safely used in pregnant women and babies, unlike many other skincare products.
Essence of Argan is an all-natural and organic product, and it is safe to say that it can be deemed safe for use.
What are customers saying about Essence of Argan?
Argan oil has gained a lot of attention in the press, and its popularity amongst A-list celebrities is well known. The site actually features part of a recent press release about stars being given Essence of Argan to wear before attending the Toronto International Film Festival. It also has overwhelmingly positive reviews by celebrities using Essence of Argan, including the famous model Jacquelin Sanabia, and actress Lauren Alexon.
Customer reviews about Essence of Argan are telling a similar story about the product’s cosmetic and skincare benefits. They describe it as a versatile product, that makes them look younger and treats skin conditions successfully.
However, outside the site, there are some customer reviews that are not happy about the expensive price, and being charged for the monthly auto shipment product they were entered into after the free trial.
Where to buy Essence of Argan and how much do they cost?
Essence of Argan can be purchased from the company website. It is available in a range of different bottle sizes: 15ml, 30ml and 50ml, that come in different prices, from $40 to $100 depending on the bottle size.

Anything else you need to know?
If you choose to give the free trial a go, you should read the fine print, as you will be automatically included in their monthly auto shipment program if you don’t cancel within the set period. You will be billed monthly $83.80 (plus shipping and handling) for a month’s supply of Essence of Argan. If you do not want to continue getting Essence of Argan after the trial, you need to contact them before the 15-day trial ends.
Also, there is a 30-day return policy for the product, but you need to acquire a return merchandise authorization number (RMA) from customer service. All returns need to be delivered within 15 days of contacting customer service. The company’s returns policy says that you will get charged the full price of $83.30 until they receive the product back, and then you will be issued your refund.
What’s our verdict?
As you can see, Essence of Argan claims to have many benefits for skin, hair, nails and acne. We found that it certainly does have a unique combination of powerful ingredients that have been proven to have positive benefits for skin care. Although we would’ve liked to see specific studies that demonstrate argan oil’s skin benefits, we are convinced that it is a skin care product you can give a go.
We didn’t find any side effects, and it’s a 100% natural and organic Moroccan oil that has been used for centuries for its positive health, beauty and skin care effects – which means that it is a safe and effective natural product to use.
Overall, after looking into the product, our opinion is that it’s safe product that has natural skin care benefits, and is an effective natural moisturizer and anti-aging product.
The biggest concern we have is their auto-shipment program after the free trial. You need to be careful with this, and if you want to avoid being billed for monthly supplies then you need to cancel within the 15 day period. As for returns, you need to make sure you obtain an RMA number and return the product within 15 days to the correct address.
So, keep away from the trial of Essence of Argan and buy similar products from reputable online shops.
Our recommendation is official Moroccan Oil on Amazon.
